Helica™ Coupler Products

Tapered Coupler – Polarizing or Polarization Maintaining

The Helica™ Tapered Coupler (Helica™ TC) is a fiber-based coupler for convenient and efficient coupling of light from an optical fiber into a planar waveguide device, photodiode or other non-standard high numerical aperture (NA) waveguide. A dual-core fiber design allows light from a conventional low NA fiber to be coupled into another waveguide with much smaller mode field dimensions at high coupling efficiency. The Helica™ TC allows index-matching compounds to be used between the coupler and waveguide as opposed to microlens-based coupling in which an air gap is unavoidable.

The Helica™ TC is available in three basic polarization maintaining or polarizing variations:

TC-PL: Linearly polarizing tapered coupler
TC-PC: Circularly polarizing tapered coupler
TC-PM: Polarization maintaining tapered coupler


The Helica™ TC products are endface coupled and are provided within a stainless steel tube and with a PM fiber pigtail. The Helica™ Evanescent Coupler is provided upon a frame which can be customized according to customer needs.

Standard central wavelengths provided are 1550, 1310 and 980 nm. The technology is readily scalable, and other central wavelengths as well as custom mode field diameters can be provided. A coupler chuck with standard 6.35 mm (0.25”) outer diameter, for compatibility with standard mounts, is also available.

Helica™ Evanescent Coupler – Standard, Polarization Maintaining, or Polarizing

The Helica™ Evanescent Coupler (Helica™ EC) is a fiber-based coupler for convenient and efficient evanescent coupling of light into planar waveguide structures or other microphotonics. This coupler is available in three basic variations:

EC-S: Standard (S) evanescent coupler
EC-PM: Polarization maintaining (PM) evanescent coupler
EC-P: Polarizing (P) evanescent coupler

The Helica™ EC is typically provided pre-attached to an Aluminum frame (see below) which can be mounted onto positioning equipment for optimal mating with the photonic device of interest. However, customized mounting specifications can be accommodated as well.

The Helica™ EC products are typically fabricated of Corning ® SMF28™ optical fibers but can be provided in other fibers to accommodate, for instance, other wavelengths of interest. Similarly, polarization maintaining versions typically utilize Corning ® Puremode™ PM photonic fibers but can utilize any PM fibers to suit your integration needs. Polarizing Helica™ ECs integrate Chiral Photonics’ in-fiber polarizer together with the evanescent coupler to deliver polarized light to the coupled device.
